Maha Shivratri 2027 in Gujarat: Date, Shiva Worship and Bhavnath Fair

Maha Shivratri (મહાશિવરાત્રિ) falls on Saturday, 6 March 2027. Devotees honour Lord Shiva through prayer, temple visits, fasting and a night of worship. In Gujarat, the occasion is also closely associated with the Bhavnath Mahadev Temple at the foot of Girnar in Junagadh.

Set aside Saturday, 6 March for the observance and plan the temple visit or home prayers with your family. Maha Shivratri is the annual festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has a special place in the year, distinct from the monthly Shivratri observance shown on other calendar dates.

Why the night is important

Shivratri means the night of Shiva. Devotees spend the occasion in worship, remembering Shiva through prayers, chanting and devotional songs. The night observance encourages people to slow down and make time for devotion, rather than fitting a hurried visit into an ordinary day.

Some families stay awake for prayers or join a temple programme. Others keep a quieter observance at home. Choose arrangements that allow everyone in the household to take part comfortably, especially children and older relatives.

Shiva worship at home

A simple prayer space can be prepared with a Shiva lingam or the image normally used by the family. Bilva leaves, flowers and water are familiar offerings in Shiva worship. Keep the arrangement clean and follow the practice observed in your home or temple.

Prepare the lamp and offering vessels before the prayers begin. If you use water for abhishek, place the shrine on a tray that can collect it, and keep the surrounding floor dry. This makes a small home arrangement easier to manage during a longer evening of worship.

Bhavnath and the Girnar setting

The Bhavnath fair is associated with Maha Shivratri at Bhavnath Mahadev Temple near Girnar in Junagadh. The gathering brings pilgrims and ascetics to this important centre of Shiva devotion. For visitors, its setting at the foot of the mountain is an important part of the experience.

If you plan to attend, confirm the current fair arrangements and local access information before travelling. The festival date does not by itself give the full fair programme. Choose accommodation and transport with the needs of your group in mind, and agree on a meeting point before entering a busy area.

Prepare for a temple visit or evening vigil

Decide whether you will attend local darshan, travel to Junagadh or worship at home. Keep the prayer items ready and leave enough time for queues if you are visiting a temple. Carry only what you need and follow the instructions given at the venue.

Fasting customs differ between households. Plan the family’s food arrangements according to your usual practice, and avoid assuming that every person joining the prayers will follow the same fast. A calm, well prepared evening gives more time for worship and less time spent rushing between arrangements.
