Navratri 2027 in Gujarat: Dates, Garba and Mataji Worship
Sharad Navratri (શારદીય નવરાત્રિ) begins on Thursday, 30 September 2027. Mahanavami is on Friday, 8 October, followed by Dussehra on Saturday, 9 October. In Gujarat, these days bring Mataji worship, evening aarti and garba gatherings that connect devotion with music and dance.

Important Navratri dates in 2027
Navratri begins on 30 September. Durga Ashtami is on 7 October, Mahanavami is on 8 October and Dussehra is on 9 October. The festival crosses two English months, so keep both the September and October calendars handy when planning the family’s evenings.
Why Navratri matters in Gujarat
Navratri means nine nights. Worship of the Goddess is central to the festival, and many Gujarati families honour Mataji with a daily prayer arrangement and aarti. The religious observance and the community gathering are closely connected, although each home and venue may follow its own routine.
The earthen garbo with a light inside is a familiar symbol of the celebration. Garba dancers move around the central lamp or sacred arrangement, bringing people together in a shared rhythm. The light and the circle give the dance its devotional setting.
Garba and dandiya raas
Garba commonly uses rhythmic steps and clapping, while dandiya raas uses sticks in coordinated patterns. They are related parts of Gujarat’s festive dance culture, but they are not the same dance. Beginners can watch the pattern first and join a slower circle.
Chaniya choli, kediyu and embroidered clothing are associated with the celebrations. Choose clothes that allow easy movement and secure loose accessories before entering the circle. Comfortable footwear and enough space matter more than keeping up with a fast group.
Plan your garba evenings
Check the venue’s entry arrangements and programme before leaving home. Agree on a meeting place if your group becomes separated, and choose an easy route for returning home. For younger children, a smaller society gathering may be more manageable than a large venue.
Carry drinking water where the venue permits it and take breaks between rounds. Keep bags and belongings outside the dancing path. If you are new to a circle, follow the direction of movement and avoid stopping suddenly in front of other dancers.
Mataji worship at home
Prepare the prayer space before the evening and keep the aarti plate stable. Some families observe a fast, maintain a lamp or follow particular offerings through Navratri. These practices belong to the family’s tradition and need not be identical in every household.
Leave time for worship even on evenings when the family plans to attend garba. Sharing a short prayer or devotional song at home helps children understand the festival beyond the costumes and music.
Use the September calendar for the opening date and the October 2027 Gujarati Calendar for Ashtami, Navami and Dussehra.
